Class 6 Methods of separation activity
You are provided with a mixture of iron nails, sand, black pepper, stones ...
To separate a mixture of iron nails, sand, black pepper, stones, common salt, and water, follow these steps:
Magnetic Separation: Use a magnet to remove the iron nails, as they are magnetic.
Sieving: Use a sieve or strainer to separate the larger stones and potentially some of the black pepper from the remaining mixture, as these components are significantly larger than sand or salt crystals.
Dissolution and Filtration: Add water to the remaining mixture of sand, black pepper, and common salt. Stir well to dissolve the common salt, as it is soluble in water, while sand and black pepper are not. Filter the mixture using a filter paper or cloth to separate the insoluble sand and black pepper (residue) from the saltwater solution (filtrate).
Evaporation: Gently heat the saltwater solution obtained from filtration. The water will evaporate, leaving the common salt behind as a solid residue. To recover the water, distillation can be used instead of simple evaporation.
